Salary Negotiations By Women

August 4, 2016 by ces

complete employees solutions is your payroll company, human resources outsourcing, employee leasingWomen’s salaries still have a way to go to catch up to men’s salaries. Although there is more parity now in some careers, not all paychecks are equal. Some of that can be attributed to the types of job that women traditionally take. In many instances the types of work they do has been valued at a lower rate of pay. Why is that? I am not sure.

In other instances, they are just paid less, and they put up with it.  The Washington Post published the results of a study conducted by the Journalists Union from publications owned by Dow Jones :

“The union that represents journalists at The Wall Street Journal, MarketWatch and Barron’s announced this week that Dow Jones, which owns the publications, pay men more than women in jobs of similar tenure.

Male staffers with up to five years of experience, for example, earn an average of 13.5 percent more than female staffers at the same level — and even slightly more than the category of women who’ve been on the job for twice as long.

The Independent Association of Publishers’ Employees 1096’s analysis found that, on average, full-time women at Dow Jones properties make about 87 cents for every dollar paid to full-time men. This includes everyone employed by Dow Jones who’s represented by the union — a group of about 1,400 across North America, including writers, copy editors and customer service representatives. (The union does not represent workers in supervisory roles.)

For comparison, women who work full time in the United States take home 79 cents for every dollar a man earns.”

Women are going to have to get better at asking for pay which is equal to that of men with the same positions, similar backgrounds and education. It would be nice to think that Employers would automatically pay women the same thing they pay men, but so far that has not happened.

Before you interview with a prospective employer, do as much research as you can to find out what people are being offered for the type of position you are seeking. Then, when you do receive an offer, you will know if you should accept it, ask for more, or just move on to the next company.

Here in Indian River County, Anthony, Matt and I have seen businesses boom, and we have seen them bust, and the common denominators are strong customer support and follow-up. When things go right and orders are fulfilled, customers needs are met, those customers will, for the most part, be loyal to your brand. They may even pay a little more for your service because they know you deliver quality products and services. When things go wrong, because sometimes they just do, it is even more important to step up to the plate, admit a mistake and do everything in your power to make it right, Whatever it takes. People respect that as well. [Read more…]

Payroll Cards

Most states now handle the unemployment and the supplemental nutritional program with re-loadable debit style cards. Did you know that payroll companies also offer that as a feature for our customers? Payroll cards are a great benefit for you and your employees if used the proper way. Some companies have begun to use regular pre-paid credit cards, but that might not be the best idea.

If you have employees who don’t work near your office, if they are scattered around the area, and if they don’t have a bank account, these re-loadable debit cards can be a very good way of getting paid.  From Chron, by Scott Thompson, Demand Media

“Payroll cards are subject to a number of regulations designed to protect employees, while general purpose re-loadable cards are not. Confusion between the two has led to much resistance against the use of payroll cards, so use the right kind of card to ensure that employees are not charged high fees to access their money.

How the Card Works

A payroll card works exactly like a debit card linked to a bank account with a direct deposit plan, except that no money other than payroll may be stored on the card, and no bank account is linked to the card. Every payday, the funds owed to the employee are automatically added to the card for the employee to use. The payroll card can be used to directly purchase goods and services at any business that accepts debit cards, or the employee can withdraw the money as cash from an ATM. Employees must be able to withdraw all funds without any fee being charged at least once every pay period unless they use an international ATM or an ATM outside the approved network.”

If you think that is something which could be helpful for your company and your employees, give us a call and we can chat about it!
