Payroll Services – Sick Days

March 16, 2016 by ces

complete employee solutions helps with sick leave, payroll solutions

Most companies have a fixed policy regarding the number of sick days they offer to their Employees. In the case of injury or a serious illness there are some exceptions made, but for the most part is important that company policies regarding Maternity, Paternity and Sick Leave are all spelled out clearly so there are no misunderstandings on anyone’s part.

I know that many of the companies we work with have a very limited sick leave policy, only 4 or 5 days. But I was curious to find out what the basic guidelines are. From the Bureau of Labor Statistics it looks like the average number of paid sick days for white collar workers is around 8 days. For blue collar workers, the average appears to be more like 6 days.

These are not regulations, especially if your company is under certain number of employees.
Should you want to learn more about the paid leave policies and how it affects your company, Complete Employee Solutions is here to answer your questions!!

What Makes You a Valuable Employee?

February 25, 2016 by ces

dress for sucessWhat makes someone a valuable employee? I don’t know about your work place, but around here, one of the things a person can do to make themselves more valuable is to pay attention.

When I explain something to an employee, and time and time again I have to show them how to do something. It’s easier to just do it myself. But if I wanted to do it myself, I wouldn’t have hired someone to do those particular tasks.

Show initiative. If something is not in your job description, but it’s a task you can handle and do it right, then do it. You might want to check in first, if I am not buried, but just do it. If the phone is ringing off the hook, if the filing is piled up, if people need help with questions that are not complex, those are things you can JUST DO. Thank you.

When I am not crazy busy, then ask some questions. Learn about other jobs that need to be done around the office. Take some classes at night. Show initiative. Show that you care about our company.

If you work for a professional firm, don’t wear jeans and a tshirt to work. Male, female, I don’t care which gender, unless it’s very casual Friday, no flip flops, no collarless shirts, and if you wear jeans, no holes!!

Leave your problems at the door. If we are friends and you are having issues, we can talk about them over lunch. But please, leave your grumpy attitude outside the door. If will infect the entire office, and everyone will be more stressed and less productive.

I don’t know about other workplaces, but these are some of the things I look for in a good employee. One that I want to continue to keep on the salary continuation plan!!

Do Your Employees Know Their Role in Your Success?

Business colleagues in office, discuss new ideas

Too often businesses don’t have the funds or resources to hire people unless there is a strong need for more workers. The only issue with that situation is we tend to pick people who can hit the ground running. Whether they are ultimately the best fit for our company is another question entirely.

As someone who does payroll work for many different companies, I see time and time again where the owners of a company only want people with experience, and pass over people, who with a little training and care, would ultimately become much better employees and team members.

One of the biggest mistakes employers make is to neglect to in grain in each employee how important their role in the company is. How to best represent the company, and where they can add value, contribute to the  company’s goals and thus make it more successful.

Forbes Magazine posted an article titled ” Ten Things Your Employees Should Know — But They Don’t ” by Liz Ryan. I thought this would be a great excerpt as the end of the year approaches, and we prepare for a new, even more successful year next year.

“How Their Job Supports the Organization’s Goals

When I was a baby  HR person we called this essential element “line of sight.” Every employee on your team needs to know how his or her work fits into the overall organization and its goals, but the vast majority of working people don’t have a clue. They do what they’re told.

That’s a waste of their brain cells and your payroll dollars, not to mention a waste of potential for everyone involved. It’s easy to explain to everybody in your shop how the pieces fit together to make the organization run.

The more altitude your teammates have, the more they can put together solutions to internal and external  problems that you and your managers haven’t even noticed yet.”

We hope you take a moment and think about how to incorporate this practice into your company. And remember, we are here to help with all of your payroll needs!

Happy Holidays!
